Taxi Media is a media company set up that allow brands to interact with their customers in a mutually beneficial environment.

Following on from the successful launch in Abu Dhabi in 2014, the company is pleased to announce their second market that will be in Dubai and set to launch in Q1 2016.

This second market will see Taxi Media deliver the largest verifiable audience in the UAE of any media product (over 10 million per month) and allow brands a highly cost effective route to market with engaging content. As the company platform are touchscreens and connected to the taxi meter system, it can accurately prove audience figures and thereby allow advertisers to gauge an accurate ROI.

How did you start your business?

I got a demo sample unit of our interactve touchscreen from the supplier and took it to the RTA in Dubai and TransAD in Abu Dhabi.

Why did you decide to go into this line of business in the UAE?
I was living here after coming to work for a publisher and love it. I think the UAE is a fantastic place to live and raise a family. Setting up a business here is very simple by comparison to the UK. We set up in Twofour54 in Abu Dhabi and they are excellent. They really offer support to all their partner companies which allows me to concentrate on running the business, knowing that our background requirements are always managed efficiently and promptly.

What were the highs and lows of setting up your business? High and Low Moments
This one is relatively easy. The low was the initial investor not having the money he claimed, which stalled the project, but we found others and got through that hiccup. The highs are winning the contract for Abu Dhabi and now Dubai and every time we get a booking from our client base, this shows they also have the same belief as we do that our system will change the face of advertising in the region.

What was your best day at work?
Two dates really, 1st September 2014 was when the system went live in Abu Dhabi and then October 22nd 2014 when we got our first cheque from Mafraq Hotel 🙂

What was your worst day at work?
Not really had one. When things don’t go according to plan, then you need to look at the issue and find a solution. All of this is part and parcel of setting up and running a business. If you let things get on top of you, you fail…this is not an option for me, I am far too strong willed to accept defeat, even when, perhaps, I should.

How did you manage to fund or finance your business?
When the original investor pulled out, I visited countless fund managers, banks and investors in DIFC all to no avail, mainly because the amount of money I was after was too small an amount!! In the end there were 5 individuals who all chipped in and go the project going. I will always strive to succeed mainly for them if nothing else as they believed in the project which means they believed in me………you cannot buy that loyalty. They all stand to make a fairly decent return on their original investments.

Who has been your greatest influence in setting up this venture?
My 2 year old daughter…her future relies on her parents doing the right thing and doing it well. Another reason I will not fail.

What advice would you give to other entrepreneurs when setting up their businesses?
Have a very clear idea of what you want your business to be and what you want to achieve. There will be several stumbles along the path, but as long as you have done your research and believe in what you are doing, pick yourself up and keep going. Don’t let others put you off.

Describe any amusing or strange experiences, or interesting moments (an incident that happened that you will never forget) that took place while establishing or running your business
One of our suppliers kindly invoiced us for several months before delivering us the service we had agreed. When I questioned why they were invoicing us for no service, their reply was “Well sir, we thought we could invoice you from when you said yes, not from when we deliver the service” Needless to say credit notices were issued.

Describe any challenges you experienced and how you overcame them
Well as a start up we still have issues, but the reason our business will succeed is transparency and accuracy of delivery for our clients. The media market in our region is, being polite, vague at best with regards to audience size accuracy, so the fact our units are 100% accurate and we are 100% transparent on what we deliver and what our clients are getting for their money, sets us apart from most of the other media products.

Outline the reasons why your business succeeded and any particular factors that influenced your success
When we launch in Dubai next year, we will deliver a verifiable monthly audience that is numerically larger than Facebook + Google + YouTube in the UAE, that is a massive audience for advertisers. Added to the fact our units can give you discount vouchers, tickets, competitions and games to make the journey more interesting than just ads, then our advertisers benefit by association.

Did you ever think you will be what you are today?
Yes, I have always believed in myself. I played a large amount of sport at competitive level and it makes you a driven person. I hate losing, so running a business is no different, it is a competition and every day you have to prove yourself to be up to the task.

Outline your future plans for your business
Lots! Besides UAE markets, we are in discussion with Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Turkey, Egypt and now India. we may not end up entering all these markets, but our coming years will certainly be exciting.

Outline any important lessons you learned along the way or ways in which you would have done things differently.
Make sure any investor is telling the truth and can deliver what they promise.

Describe the defining moment that made you feel certain that your business is going in the direction you want it to go.
Winning the Dubai contract after 3 years of discussions with the RTA.

Explain why you set up your business in the UAE

What is the single most important decision you made that contributed to your business?
Deciding to go ahead with it

Anything you want to add or tell us?
If you have an idea or a wish go for it. The worst that can happen is that it fails, but on your deathbed, you won’t have any “If only I did…..” regrets.

Oh I am Welsh and proud of it!!
